چکیده

Until recently, large apex consumers were ubiquitous across the globe and had been for millions of years. The loss of these animals may be humankind's most pervasive influence on nature. Although such losses are widely viewed as an ethical and aesthetic problem, recent research reveals extensive cascading effects of their disappearance in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. This empirical work supports long-standing theory about the role of top-down forcing in ecosystems but also highlights the unanticipated impacts of trophic cascades on processes as diverse as the dynamics of disease, wildfire, carbon sequestration, invasive species, and biogeochemical cycles. These findings emphasize the urgent need for interdisciplinary research to forecast the effects of trophic downgrading on process, function, and resilience in global ecosystems.

Direct and indirect trophic effects of predator depletion on basal trophic levels.

Human population growth and development have heavily degraded coastal ecosystems with cascading impacts across multiple trophic levels. Understanding both the direct and indirect trophic effects of human activities is important for coastal conservation. In New England, recreational overfishing has triggered a regional trophic cascade. Predator depletion releases the herbivorous purple marsh cra...

The Moon Meets All Requirements of the IAU Definition for “Planet”

The Earth-Moon system has often been characterized as having some characteristics of a “double planet” system. It is demonstrated that while the orbital barycenter of the Earth-Moon pair lies inside the radius of the Earth, the Moon does meet all three requirements of the IAU definition for “planet” and therefore the Moon can correctly be identified as the Solar System’s 9 planet. In order to a...

The Occurrence Rate of Small Planets around Small Stars

We use the optical and near-infrared photometry from the Kepler Input Catalog to provide improved estimates of the stellar characteristics of the smallest stars in the Kepler target list. We find 3897 dwarfs with temperatures below 4000K, including 64 planet candidate host stars orbited by 95 transiting planet candidates. We refit the transit events in the Kepler light curves for these planet c...

Spreading the power: comment on "Life, hierarchy, and the thermodynamic machinery of planet Earth" by A. Kleidon.

Kleidon’s ambitious review [1] of the thermodynamic machinery of Earth starts out as an accessible primer in non-equilibrium thermodynamics (this is necessary because entropy is probably the least understood and most central concept to the physics of life). He then builds a comprehensive model of how solar power spreads around the Earth through a hierarchy of levels – a trophic pyramid of power...
